Apartments in Atlanta were highly sought after throughout 2023, making it the number one city for renters. Compared with other U.S. cities analyzed, Atlanta renters added 60% more listings to their favorites list than a year ago. Atlanta reached the podium twice and ranked among the top ten most sought-after cities eight times throughout the year.
The number one city was Kansas City, MO, where renters added three times as many favorites to their lists as they did last year, confirming the appeal of this vibrant yet affordable city in the Midwest. Six times during the year, Kansas City ranked among the top three cities for our monthly ranking.
After a 19% rise in traffic, Cincinnati rounded out the top 3 with renters favoring twice as many properties. Renters only selected the city once this year as one of their top 3 hotspots, but the city had a successful end to the year.
After dominating our rankings for three months straight during peak rental season in 2023, Arlington, VA, landed at #4. The number of listings viewed by renters in the city in 2023 was 52% higher than the number viewed in 2022.
As the fifth most popular city for renters, Orlando, FL, attracted 18% more traffic and had twice as many apartment rentals as other cities.
In 2023, Minneapolis ranked sixth. Also, Minneapolis listings attracted the highest number of engagements in our November rental activity report, making it the state’s most populated city for the first time.
Denver ranked seventh. Rental listings on RentCafe.com were heavily searched throughout the year, resulting in its success. Apartment seekers were clearly drawn to the city because of its tech/energy/finance economy, sunny climate, and array of outdoor activities.
Portland ranked eighth. In addition to its quirkiness, Portland has renter appeal, which helped it rank eighth in the top 30 for 2023. Portland’s relaxed pace and food and beverage culture are some of its most appreciated aspects. The city also claimed a spot in the top 30 last year as a result of its balanced combination of entertainment and diverse employment opportunities.
Albuquerque ranked 9th. Another Western city, Albuquerque, ranked #9 on our list of cities in high demand for renters in 2023. Our reports during the high season for renting showed that it ranked as high as or even higher than during the low season.
Number 10 was Overland Park. In the ranking for 2023, this Kansas City suburb ranked #10. Considering Overland Park’s favorable track among the most sought-after cities throughout the year, this comes as no surprise. It ranked second in our top 30 in June and October.
